Mesa Knee Signal

Which knee questions come up most?

Mesa's Red Mountain indoor track offers level ground when the outdoor heat changes your walk. If the knee still aches there, these brief answers may help.

A webpage can't examine you or feel where the soreness starts. The person treating you may give different advice after an exam.

What should I know before choosing care?

The first question is why your knee is sore. Then ask how long relief might last and which problems could follow.

You may keep your medicine list and questions nearby for the call. You don't need to learn medical terms before a visit.

Do knee injections need ultrasound guidance?

Not every knee shot needs ultrasound because a trained provider can also guide the needle by touch. The screen shows fluid, the needle tip, and the small gap inside the knee where medicine goes, but it can't promise longer relief.

When should I avoid a gel shot?

A very warm, swollen knee, an illness, or broken skin nearby calls for an exam first. Blood thinners, a bleeding problem, or a replacement joint also need review because a gel shot won't fit every person or cause.

What can I do after PRP?

PRP means platelet-rich plasma, made by spinning your blood and gathering the platelets into less liquid. Your care at home depends on how that blood was prepared and on your health, so please ask when to walk, work, exercise, and restart medicine.

What kinds of knee shots are common?

Common choices include cortisone, gel, and PRP made from your own blood. They differ in cost, likely relief, and care afterward, while ultrasound only describes how someone guides the needle.

How long can a cortisone shot help?

Cortisone often helps most during the early weeks, and the relief may fade. Your result can differ from someone else's, so another shot deserves a new talk with the person treating you.

Where can I have my knee examined near Mesa?

Dobson Road or US-60 takes west and central Mesa toward Chandler. From north Mesa, Scottsdale may be a shorter drive by Loop 202 Red Mountain and Loop 101, though you'll want to call ahead about the care offered.

  1. A systematic review of ultrasound versus anatomic (landmark) guidance found needle-placement accuracy was greater with ultrasound guidance at every anatomic site, and short-term (<6 weeks) symptom onset improved, but long-term outcomes were NOT shown to differ between the two techniques; the accuracy advantage was largest in small joints.

The 2015 Cochrane review of 27 trials (1,767 participants) found intra-articular corticosteroid better than sham for knee OA pain (SMD -0.40, 95% CI -0.58 to -0.22; NNTB 8), but the benefit decayed with time: moderate at 1-2 weeks, small at 13 weeks, and no evidence of any effect at 26 weeks. All outcomes were graded LOW quality.

A meta-analysis found ipsilateral intra-articular corticosteroid injection within 3 months BEFORE joint arthroplasty was associated with increased periprosthetic joint infection risk, and the authors recommend against performing arthroplasty on a joint injected within that window - while injections given at any time overall showed no such association.

A clinical review of peripheral joint injections frames them as a treatment for joint-mediated pain (arthritis, tendinopathy, bursitis) that has NOT responded to conservative management, and states plainly that these injections are typically not curative - their objective is to reduce pain enough to allow physical and pharmacologic rehabilitation to work.

A review of ten studies found single local corticosteroid injections caused a significant but TRANSIENT rise in blood glucose in patients with diabetes, with no adverse reactions or complications reported, and concluded such injections are most likely safe in people whose diabetes is well controlled.

What if the soreness doesn't settle?

QC Kinetix offers a consultation about regenerative treatments, a term for non-surgical care that may use part of your own blood. Staff prepare the blood, and trained medical providers place the chosen material into the sore knee with a needle.

You can talk about the ache, past care, natural pain treatments, and knee surgery alternatives. When you're ready, (602) 837-PAIN can help you find the nearest clinic.
